Enhancing Emissions Accuracy with Activity Inputs

Last updated: November 27, 2025

Coolset uses a hybrid approach to calculate carbon emissions by combining financial data with activity inputs. This method improves accuracy and gives a more detailed view of your company’s environmental impact. Understanding how and when to use activity inputs can help you make smarter sustainability decisions.

What are activity inputs?

Activity inputs are specific, measurable data points about your operations that influence your carbon emissions. Unlike financial data, which offers a general overview (e.g., how much you spent on fuel), activity inputs focus on the actual quantities and types of activities—like:

  • Liters of fuel used

  • Kilometers traveled

  • Kilograms of material purchased

This detail enables more precise carbon calculations.

Common types of activity inputs

The types of activity inputs you collect depend on your operations. Here are common categories:

1. Logistics & transportation

  • Mode of transport (air, road, sea)

  • Fuel type

  • Distance traveled (in kilometers)

  • Load efficiency

2. Energy consumption

  • Electricity, gas, or other fuels used in your facilities

3. Waste management

  • Volume and types of waste

  • Disposal methods (recycled, landfilled, etc.)

4. Supply chain operations

  • Resource usage in supplier processes (e.g., steel, wood, paper, plastic)

When should you use activity inputs?

Use activity inputs when:

  • You have access to reliable, detailed operational data

  • Your business has direct control over logistics, energy use, waste, or supply chain activities

Getting started

If you already know which areas of your business have the highest carbon impact, begin collecting activity inputs there.
If you're unsure, start with a spend-based method to identify high-impact categories, then layer in activity data for more precision.

How to Upload Activity Inputs to Coolset

1. Prepare Your Data

Collect detailed records from:

  • Logistics providers

  • Facilities management

  • Supply chain partners

2. Format the File

Ensure your file is in XLSX or CSV format and includes:

FieldDescription

Date

Organize by year, month, or transaction

Amount

Use kilograms (KG), liters (L), or kilometers (KM)

Type of Input

E.g., steel, wood, diesel fuel

Vendor Name

Who supplied the product or service

Supplier-Specific Emission Factor

Optional but recommended for accuracy

3. Submit Your File

Email the formatted file to your Coolset representative.
Our team will upload your data and replace any matching expense data where applicable.
