Absolute emissions offer a comprehensive view of the total greenhouse gas emissions generated by your company. In addition to absolute emissions, calculating emission intensities provides valuable insights. Emission intensities measure your company’s emissions relative to key growth metrics, offering a clear understanding of the environmental impact in relation to business expansion. This approach allows businesses to benchmark their environmental impact against two key indicators: the number of employees and total revenue, facilitating a clearer understanding of emission trends and the effectiveness of reduction strategies.

Emissions per employee

As companies expand, the workforce typically grows, potentially leading to increased emissions from commuting and remote work. Monitoring emissions per full-time equivalent (FTE) employee, rather than simply counting heads, offers a more precise gauge of this impact. This metric helps businesses assess the effectiveness of their emissions reduction strategies on a per-employee basis, taking into account both full-time and part-time staff.

Emissions per unit of revenue

Revenue growth often necessitates increased procurement of goods and services, which can, in turn, elevate a company's carbon emissions. To discern whether operational efficiencies or environmental performance improvements have been achieved despite this growth, businesses can evaluate their emissions relative to each unit of revenue generated. This comparison offers insights into how well a company is managing its environmental impact in the context of its economic expansion.

Setting up absolute emissions

Implementing an absolute emissions tracking system is straightforward and can be accomplished through the following steps:

  1. Navigate to the homepage and select the "Absolute emissions" option located centrally at the top of the screen.

  2. Proceed to "Emission intensity settings."

  3. Choose the assessment year.

  4. Fill in the open fields:

    • Enter the number of employees (FTE) at the end of the chosen assessment year.

    • Provide the total revenue for the preceding year.

  5. After entering this information, click "Submit."

  6. Return to the "Absolute emissions" section and select either "Emissions per employee" or "Emissions per unit of revenue." The dashboard will update to reflect the chosen metric, offering a tailored view of the company's emissions data.
