Update: GHG Protocol categories now available
Last updated: March 7, 2025
This year, we achieved certification by TÜV Rheinland and we are integrating the categories provided by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHGP) into our platform.
Until now, we have mapped emissions to their scopes (1, 2, or 3) and detailed categories—what we call 'Coolset sectors and subsectors'. These provide a detailed breakdown of your emissions sources (see example below).

To become fully aligned with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHGP) we will also be showing your emissions according to the categories defined by the GHGP. These categories are corresponding to the scope 1, 2 and 3 categories.
What has changed?
Coolset sectors vs Greenhouse Gas categories
Every transaction is now mapped to both a Coolset sector and a GHGP category. For example, a flight from Amsterdam to London is categorized as:
-
Coolset sector and subsector: Scope 3 - 'Travel, transport & logistics' > 'Air travel'
-
GHGP category: Scope 3 – 'Business travel'
This does not result in double counting; rather, it provides two different perspectives on your data.
Addition of upstream fuel- and energy-related emissions
For fuel- and energy-related emissions, we are now including emissions from the upstream phase—i.e., emissions generated during energy production. These are known as well-to-tank (WTT) emissions. The emissions from the use-phase, tank-to-wheel emissions (TTW), remain part of your Scope 1 & 2 calculations. For electricity consumption, the upstream phase also includes transmission and distribution (T&D) losses—the energy lost during distribution.
For example, if you report gasoline consumption for company vehicles under Scope 1, your emissions will now also include the upstream well-to-tank (WTT) emissions—those generated during fuel extraction, refining, and transportation. These emissions will be assigned automatically based on the amount of fuel or energy consumed. Similarly, for electricity consumption in Scope 2, additional emissions from transmission and distribution (T&D) losses will be reflected under Scope 3. This ensures a more complete picture of your carbon footprint by accounting for emissions across the entire energy lifecycle.
These emissions correspond to the GHGP scope 3 category called 'Fuel- and Energy-Related Activities Not Included in Scope 1 or Scope 2'.

What can you expect in the app?
With this update, you can now click on transactions to view their corresponding GHGP category in the side panel. When downloading reports, your emissions will also be listed per GHGP category for greater transparency.
Soon, we will introduce a feature that allows you to easily switch between the GHGP and Coolset category overviews.

Will this impact your emissions?
-
The category update will not change your existing classifications, as we are using the same emission factors.
-
You may now see additional emissions included in your Scope 3 calculations, specifically capturing the upstream phase of fuel and energy-related activities.
